The New Forest District Council was created by Act of Parliament on April 1 1974, and embraces the whole of the former Borough of Lymington, the New Forest Rural District Council that was established in 1895. The area covered by the New Forest District Council stretches from the borders of Wiltshire in the north to the Solent in the south, and from the borders of Dorset in the west to the waterside towns of Totton, Hythe and Marchwood in the east.People the world over have heard of the New Forest; few who visit can fail to fall under the spell of this unique place, shaped by centuries of tradition, with a natural beauty all its own. The thriving towns and villages of all sizes are contained within an area which is a blend of forest, downland and gentle coastline. But, although we protect the beauty of the New Forest, we have not allowed time to stand still; industry, small and large, thrives here, as does community life. Excellent schools provide education for growing families while every type of sport and leisure pursuit is catered for. Each of the six towns has a splendid choice of shops, while there are bustling markets, arts centres and craft galleries providing interest and variety.A strong sense of partnership exists between the New Forest District Council and local town and parish councils, with regular meetings between members and officers.
