Hart district has a population of 85,693. Rapid population growth has been experienced in the past (between 1961-2001 the population more than doubled).

Hart is the least deprived district in the country; has low unemployment; the population is well educated; health is above average; and there is a high percentage of those earning more than £100k annually. It is semi-rural and the quality of both urban and rural environments are generally high.

The district supports very contrasting communities. In the north east of Hart are the communities of Yateley, Hawley and Blackwater which function as part of the urban Blackwater Valley sub region. Fleet is the district’s principal settlement and centre of administration.

Over 90% of the district is open countryside. Poor accessibility to services exists in some of our rural localities.

62% of the population of Hart commute out of the district to reach their place of employment.

Hart district has attracted some of the country's finest technology based companies. It is the european home of Sun Microsystems and is also the headquarters for NTL, based in Hook.

Over 70% of Hart residents have access to the Internet at home or at work, which is well above the national average. Through the Council’s role of Community leader it has actively lobbied for broadband services in rural areas of the district.
