Bandwidth | The amount of data (information) that can be transmitted and received by an Internet connection, e.g. rather like a water pipe, the larger the pipe the more water that can pass through it. The maximum bandwidth through a dial up phone line connection is 56 kilobits per second (56kbps), for a broadband connection it is at least 512kbps. |
BER | Bit Error Rate - the number of bit errors in the data stream. An example is 1 in 104. This means 1 errored bit in 10,000 |
Bps | Bits-per-second - rate of data transfer between computers or modems |
Broadband (BB) | A high speed digital internet connection which features bandwidth in excess of 512kbs and which is ‘always on’. |
Browser | Program that allows you to view web pages and explore the internet |
BW | Bandwidth - refers to how fast data flows through the path that it travels to your computer; it's usually measured in kilobits, megabits or gigabits per second.
|
Byte | A byte - is the basis for measurement of most computer data as multiples of the byte value. A "megabyte" is one million bytes or eight million bits or a "gigabyte" is one billion bytes or eight billion bits |
