Mobile Music - Fareham - Case Study
Written by Cedric Colwell (2 May 2006)

Mobile Music has been established since 1993, but it was in October 2000 that we got connected to the internet and set up a website. The "dial-up" system that we used for the next five years worked reasonably well (most of the time), but became progressively more frustrating when we were waiting for e-mail attachments to download or website pages to open. Naturally, we were always conscious of the cost when on line for an extended period, also the fact that the telephone would be engaged. Our business, which includes music related sales and audio services, relies on us being available outside of what many consider to be "normal" business hours. This of course coincides with cheaper rate phone calls and consequently was when we were most likely to be on line, so not contactable by phone!
We had often talked about broadband, but felt that the cost couldn't be justified, however late last year we were approached by Hampshire Broadband with the offer of a £100 grant to businesses who didn't yet have the facility installed. We decided that this was too good an opportunity to miss, so in January 2006 we got connected and I attended the 'Advice Session' which is part of the Hampshire Broadband deal. I must say that this two hour session was really useful to learn the "ground rules", especially in respect of security issues.
What a difference! With a connection that's always there without tying up the phone line, it's very convenient to search for information and communicate by e-mail whenever the need arises. Software updates and picture files that used to be very slow to download are now no longer a problem and e-mails can be responded to much more quickly. We haven't yet had the opportunity to properly assess the standard monthly fees against what we will save in "dial-up" charges, but I would guess that if broadband does cost more, this is easily made up for by the speed and convenience of an "always available" connection.
